Dirk doet Darwin
Dirk Draulans, Vlaams bioloog en één van de hoofdpersonen op de Beagle, is een man met passie voor de
wetenschap. De afgelopen maanden heb je hem leren kennen als expert op het gebied van het gedrag van dieren. In zijn geheel eigen stijl en taal vertelt Dirk hoe de wetenschap
sinds Darwin naar de evolutie kijkt.
De Vlaamse bioloog heeft al sinds het begin van zijn studie biologie maar één goeroe: Charles Darwin. In 2008 schreef Dirk als hulde aan deze man en zijn theorie, het boek
Het Succes van Slechte Seks.
Naar aanleiding van dit boek, de tweehonderdste verjaardag van Charles Darwin en de 150e verjaardag van zijn bekendste werk On the Origin of Species, bracht Canvas op 17 februari 2009 "Dirk doet Darwin". Een documentaire waar Dirk voor een live
publiek zijn licht laat schijnen op de evolutietheorie.
In Dirk doet Darwin vertelt Dirk over de evolutietheorie en wat die vandaag voor ons kan betekenen. Hij doet dat aan de hand van een college evolutiebiologie in
de Academiezaal in Sint-Truiden.
Dirk neemt je mee op een reis door de tijd en door verschillende wetenschappen. Hij vertrekt in de prehistorie en eindigt in onze eigen huiskamer, waar hij de evolutietheorie
van Charles Darwin op ons eigen leven toepast. Je zult verbaast staan over de mate waarin je eigen gedrag - en dat van je omgeving - een biologische verklaring heeft.

Wat een mooi verhelderend college!
Goede verteller en dit zonder een glas water, moet ik nog eens horen want op bepaalde momenten fronste ik toch wat de wenkbrauwen.
Onder ander: het menselijk voortplantingsorgaan.
Menig medestander minder geslaagd wordt op medische sites aangaande het orgaan tot rust gemaand dat lengte het er niet toe doet.
Professor Dirk laat verstaan:
Hoe groter het lid, hoe dieper deze de spermaproductie in de baarmoeder kan brengen?
Nu is mijn vraag of de professor zich niet heeft vergist?

Dear Dirk,
I have to be honest. Before Beagle I did not know you. Then on Beagle you were one of the biologists on board the Stad Amsterdam. Having seen this video, however, I suddenly see that you can inspire people and tell a good story that has plenty of depth and makes the whole picture clear. I am not going to write about any of the details of what you say in this video, but I think that it is important that we people know who we really are and how come we can behave or do respond to certain things in life as a result of it. Best thing of all: We are not some kind of super being, but just like all the other creatures living on this earth in our own way, though we have a power of thought that lets us have many questions and a sense of morality, which in turn does not have us let others drown so easily, but allows us to take care of each other with the right responsibility. It is the very basis from which we can go on, though there are also still many details to fill in then ... and we are back at the state of the world. One of our biggest challenges, I think: How can we people unite in spite of all the differences in our believes.
This is not about biology so much, and yet, a friend of mine wrote me after September 11th, 2001, that this day had been a wake-up call for him. Some time after that day he was also in the streets of New York with other people, who carried an Ark, trying to convince the country's government at the time not engage in another war as a result of it. History has proved different, but I have started to understand my friend more and more as time went by.
No more words, I just hope that you can inspire us more in Beagle, in the same way as you did in this video, about who we are and what makes us tick. I do also not know what you are going to do after the program, but I hope that it will be something in the same field. The more so as Beagle may be a big project now, but there is also more work to do afterwards and the world needs good teachers who can inspire people in all honesty.

En als aanvullende vraag: hoe verhoudt de aan het einde van hetcollege aangestipte 'groepsselectie' zich mogelijk tot het (overigens omstreden?) door Samuel Huntigton gepubilceerde paradigma van de 'clasf of civilizatins'? Een prachtig verhaal van Dirk.
In 2009 zijn in dezelfde setting twee uitzendingenseries opgenomen: 'Stijn en de sterren' en 'Stijn en het heelal'.
Op www.canvas.be zijn wat fragmenten hiervan terug te zien.
Misschien wat voor de VPRO om deze prachtige programma's op de Nederlandse tv te laten zien .....
